BEM’s 42.5 strength-class slag cement, produced for Cyprus’s climate and island conditions — resistant to sulphate, acid and chloride attack.
Portland slag cement is obtained by grinding portland clinker together with 6–20% or 21–35% by mass of granulated blast-furnace slag (depending on its class in the standard) and a small amount of gypsum as a setting regulator. Thanks to the strength the slag contributes at later ages, the strength achieved in all mortar and concrete applications is higher than with a portland cement of the same fineness. Its most important properties are resistance to harmful environmental effects, low porosity, resistance to reinforcement corrosion and high durability.
Suited to Cyprus’s climate and island conditions, it is used wherever concrete needs resistance to harmful chemical attack such as sulphates, acids and chlorides: coastal, port and quay construction, dams and canals, underground water pipes — in short, all structures that may be in contact with sea water. Taking these exposure conditions into account, BEM produces CEM II/B-S 42,5 N type Portland slag cement tailored to the country’s conditions.
